A thread was posted on the RAP Forum recently addressing some guy who blogged about RAP, saying it’s a good sales platform but that it’s “easy to spoof”.
Actually, that’s not accurate. The vast majority of patches issued for RAP have been designed to fix security holes, and are frequently issued less than a week after they’re discovered.
However, there are a number of things that people do, or rather, fail to do, that result in both “leaks” and upset customers.
Here are several things you MUST DO when setting up your RAP site to avoid problems:
- rename the downloads folder to something other than ‘dlds’; everybody KNOWS that’s the default name!
- put a dummy index.html file inside of the download folder. If you don’t, anybody can view a list of files in it and grab whatever they want at any time.
- for greatest security, place the downloads folder outside of your document root (eg, public_html) folder.
- install updates and patches in a timely manner. It’s really a lot simpler than it appears.
- use RAP’s built-in download link structure to get protected links, rather than putting direct DL links on your pages.
- if you have multiple files to download, use the multi-download addon that’s included free with RAP.
- edit ALL of the RAP template files, and especially don’t ignore footers on other templates. Be sure visitors can find out how to contact you in case of errors. Ignoring this makes people angry and more likely to pass around your DL links or even your DL files, as well as lies about your product(s) and site.
If your RAP sites aren’t running the latest version, V3.1.8, then you’re at risk for losing sales and leaking products out the back-door.
I’m available to do your upgrades and tighten things up, as well as do new product installs for you.
